The unusual drink McDonald's is giving runners over Chicago Marathon weekend

McDonald’s is offering Chicago Marathon participants a little something extra during race weekend — but it’s not the chain’s famous Big Mac, fries or Chicken McNuggets.

Instead, it’s pickle juice.

Pickle juice or brine is a common cramp remedy among athletes and runners due to its vinegar content, which is said to signal to the brain to calm and release muscle cramps. Friday through Sunday, McDonald’s will be bottling up the salty liquid and handing it out across the city, calling it “Pickle Boost.”

The limited edition bottled brine, McDonald’s said, will be handed out along the Lakefront Trail at 2401 N. Lake Shore Drive until 1 p.m. Friday, and at select Chicago McDonald’s restaurants from 7 to 3 p.m. Sunday.

Complementary Pickle Boost will be available for runners and spectators at specific locations, limited to two per person.

“When it comes to pickles, we’ll always go the extra mile,” McDonald’s said in a release.

Here’s where the Pickle Boost will be available:

  • 2635 N Clark St
  • 1563 N Wells St
  • 600 N Clark St
  • 203 N LaSalle St
  • 207 E 35th St
