‘Strong tornadoes' possible in Illinois as severe weather threat increases

Weather forecasters have upgraded most of Illinois to an “enhanced” risk of severe storms on Thursday, with “strong tornadoes” possible.

According to that guidance from the Storm Prediction Center, nearly all of northern and central Illinois are at that “enhanced” risk level, the third of five levels used by the SPC.

Northwest Indiana is at a “slight” risk of severe weather on Thursday, the second of those five levels.

The main threats with any severe thunderstorms that develop would be damaging wind gusts, especially in Illinois, and the possibility of “fast-moving and strong” tornadoes, according to the SPC.

The alert from the SPC warns that the atmospheric conditions could potentially lead to the development of discrete supercell thunderstorms, which can in turn generate large tornadoes that pack life-threatening winds.

While there is a possibility of showers and a few isolated thunderstorms early in the day Thursday, especially in areas to the west and north of Chicago, the main event is expected to develop by the mid-afternoon as a storm system pushes from southwest-to-northeast across the region.

That is when lines of storms and some isolated supercell thunderstorms could develop, with minor flooding possible in addition to the chance of damaging winds and tornadoes.

The weather threat will start to die down around sunset, with showers and storms moving out of the area late Thursday night, according to the NBC 5 Storm Team.

Temperatures will still be pleasant on Friday, with readings in the upper-60s and low-70s, then another disturbance could bring showers to the region on Saturday, with temps cooling behind it as they drop into the 50s.
