Dua Lipa is suing Samsung Electronics for $15 million, accusing the South Korean electronics giant of using her image to sell TVs without her permission.
The lawsuit, filed Friday in California, alleges that Samsung used a copyrighted photo of the British pop star on the packaging of television boxes sold in the U.S. and financially benefited from what appeared to suggest her endorsement of the products.
According to the complaint, Lipa owns the rights to the photo, which was taken backstage before her performance at the Austin City Limits festival in 2024. Lipa became aware of Samsung’s use of the photo on the front of the boxes in June 2025 and “immediately demanded that Samsung cease and desist from the infringement.” The lawsuit accuses Samsung of refusing to do so, and instead “willfully, intentionally, and purposefully” has continued to use it.
The complaint includes photos of a cardboard box featuring an image of a Samsung television that shows a portion of Lipa’s face displayed on the screen. It also includes screenshots of social media posts with comments from fans that claimed to have bought the TV because Lipa was on the box or suggesting they would make the purchase “just because Dua Lipa is on it.”
“Samsung exploited Ms. Lipa’s carefully curated and extremely valuable brand identity to sell televisions, by using, without authorization, Ms. Lipa’s copyrighted image on the front of cardboard boxes offering Samsung televisions for sale,” the lawsuit states “Ms. Lipa’s face was prominently used for a mass marketing campaign for a consumer product without her knowledge, consideration, and as to which she had no say, control, or input whatsoever.”
Lipa is alleging copyright violation, trademark infringement and breach of publicity rights. The “Levitating” singer is seeking a permanent injunction against Samsung and “no less than” $15 million in actual damages, plus punitive damages and legal costs.
Samsung did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
