Severe storms brought hail, gusty winds, heavy downpours and tornado warnings to parts of the Chicago area Monday morning — and the threat isn’t over yet.
While the initial line of storms continues to pummel the region, dumping golf-ball sized hail in some locations and power outages in others, the potential for severe storms won’t end when this line does.
The risk for severe storms will continue into the evening hours, according to the NBC 5 Storm Team.
While many of the alerts are expected to expire by Monday afternoon, a severe thunderstorm watch remains in effect across much of the area until 7 p.m.
That includes Cook, DuPage, Kankakee, Lake and Will counties in Illinois and Lake, LaPorte, Porter and Jasper counties in Indiana.
“Periods of thunderstorms will be possible this afternoon and evening,” according to the National Weather Service. “If storms occur, they may become severe with large hail and damaging winds.”
The afternoon storms, however, will not be as widespread as the earlier round, with pop-up storms possible through those hours. The highest chances of additional storms will be across Cook County, eastern Will County and northwest Indiana.
The Storm Prediction Center placed the entire Chicago area under an “enhanced” threat of severe weather Monday, a level three out five.
“So as we go through the afternoon into the evening, destructive wind gusts over 70 mph can’t be ruled out, golf ball-sized hail,” NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Iisha Scott said. “The tornado risk is low, but it’s not zero, so there is the potential that any of these storms could produce a quick spin up tornado as well. So you do want to stay on guard as we go through the rest of today.”
