A recent nationwide thyroid medication recall has been upgraded by the Food and Drug Administration to the agency’s highest risk level, with FDA officials warning the “superpotent” drug could “cause serious adverse health consequences or death.”
Drug company Vitruvias Therapeutics Inc. issued the nationwide recall for thyroid tablets in August after it was found the medication could potentially lead to hyperthyroidism if taken. The recall was updated earlier this week to a Class 1 recall, meaning the FDA considers it “a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.”
The recall applies to Lot 504950 of 30 mg Thyroid Tablets that were prescribed to patients. According to a news release posted by the Food and Drug Administration, Vitruvias Therapeutics is “proactively notifying its wholesalers by email and phone to discontinue distribution of the product.”
The drug company said it was arranging for the recalled tablets to be destroyed, but warned patients to not stop taking the medication without speaking to their doctor.
According to the release, dated Aug. 24, the tablets were distributed nationwide from Jan. 31 2025, to Sept. 30, 2025. A full description of the recalled product and the label can be found below.
| Product | NDC | Lot | Exp Date | Units Released | Units Sold | First Distribution Date | Last Distribution Date |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Thyroid Tablets, USP 30 mg | 69680- 166-00 | 504950 | 9/30/2026 | 3,655 | 1955 | 1/31/2025 | 9/30/2025 |

Taking superpotent Thyroid tables can lead to overactive thyroid, the announcement said, and cause a number of adverse health impacts including heat intolerance, fatigue, nervousness, muscle weakness, hypertension, chest pain, rapid heart rate, or heart rhythm disturbances.
